How to Plan Your Awards Event

1

Gather With Your Leaders to Plan

Here are a few questions to start your planning conversations: 1. When will we host our event? (Most choose the last night of clubs, since this night is already blocked off for leaders and kids!) 2. What have each of the children in your groups achieved this year? 3. What growth/improvement have we seen in each of these kids? 4. How have we seen Jesus through this child? 5. How soon can we order our awards?

2

Order Your Awards

Order early and open your awards right when you receive them to ensure you have everything you need to celebrate each child. You don’t want to be surprised the night before awards with a broken trophy or a missing ribbon!

3

Celebrate kids’ growth in becoming more like Jesus!

Your clubs are incredibly well run and strategic; all of the work done sets the stage for each child to have the opportunity to connect with their Creator. Use your awards night to be intentional about sharing what God has done in the lives of these kids! Whether it is through a video, picture slideshow, or even live testimonies, everyone in attendance needs to see the work God has done through the last year!

Tip 1

Recognize Every Child

While the recognition for book finishers is an incredible achievement, there’s more to be celebrated for all that has been accomplished and learned throughout the club year! Celebrate kids for good sportsmanship, attendance, kindness and more with general awards: Victory Trophy, Merit Medallion, Workman Trophy, Helper Pin, Achievement & Participation Ribbons.

Tip 2

Celebrate Your Leaders & Volunteers

By planning ahead, you give yourself the opportunity to pull together a thoughtful gift/thank you for each of your faithful leaders. If you have the budget, consider giving a small gift for all they have done to pour into the kids of your church. If you have a limited budget, a hand-written note of thanks is a powerful gesture!

Here are some ideas!

General Gift Ideas: Leader Recognition Pins, Leadership Service Award Pin

Have kids sign a t-shirt or jersey for their club leader or fill a club bag, backpack or tote with Awana gifts or items specific to the recipient’s personal likes such as gift cards, tickets to events or movies and books.

Write a special message on a game pin, a relay baton or a beach ball for your Game Director!

Tip 3

Invite Parents & Families

An awards ceremony is a great opportunity to get parents and families involved in their kids’ discipleship. Help them see how their kids have grown in becoming more like Jesus! Awards show kids’ growth in achieving discipleship milestones.

Tip 4

Help Kids Complete Their Handbooks

It’s not too late for kids to finish their handbooks! Here are some ideas:

Host a Saturday fast track. Open the church from 8 am – 12 pm, and invite kids and parents to drop in. Have volunteers available to listen to verses. If you have the budget, offer pizza or ice cream at the end!

Invite kids and their parents to meet in the lobby after church. Offer this as a time for them to complete their verses!
